At Crane Trust, our mission is rooted in the restoration and protection of Nebraska’s native prairie—and few symbols represent that work more powerfully than the American bison. These iconic animals play a vital role in maintaining healthy grassland ecosystems, and we are continually working to ensure they have the space they need to thrive.
We are incredibly grateful to the Union Pacific Community Ties Giving Program for their generous support of our bison program. Their investment is helping us take an important step forward: expanding our bison prairie through the addition of new fencing.
This expansion is about much more than infrastructure. By increasing the size of the prairie, we are creating more room for our herd to roam naturally—supporting behaviors like grazing and movement patterns that are essential to the health of both the animals and the land. Bison are ecosystem engineers, and their presence helps promote plant diversity, improve soil health, and create habitat for countless other species.
The new fencing will allow us to better manage the landscape while restoring additional acres of native grassland. As we expand, we strengthen the resilience of this ecosystem—ensuring it can support wildlife, withstand environmental pressures, and continue to serve as a living example of conservation in action.
